Henry Hugh Allen was born in 1862, the son of Thomas Taylor Allen and his first wife Mary (nee Holthom) at Stratford-on-Avon.  In the 1881 census Thomas Taylor Allen listed his occupation as variously architect, sanitary engineer, surveyor, valuer and Town Surveyor for Stratford-on-Avon. Henry Allen appears to have had little or no formal training as an architect. In 1891, aged 29, he was an assistant manager in a joinery works living in Aston, Birmingham and appears to have remained there until 1895.  By 1901 he was stated to be an architect, resident in West Ham, Essex before moving to Bristol about 1903.  About 1910 he had moved again to Prestwich, Manchester, describing himself as an architect and surveyor in the Sedgley Park estate office on Bury Old Road. His role was seemingly that of an administrator. At that time the Sedgley Park Estate was being sold off and developed for housing, particularly in Kings Road (see Joseph Sunlight).

Henry Hugh Allen died in 1938
