The eldest son of John Adam and Louisa Ellen Whyatt, Henry Gilbert Whyatt was born at Gorton, Manchester, on 16 September 1860. He was educated privately and articled in 1875. He joined the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1881 before being appointed Chief Assistant to the Borough Engineer of Salford in 1888 and promoted to Deputy Borough Engineer Salford in 1890. About 1902 he obtained the post of Borough Engineer and Surveyor of Grimsby. He was an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, (elected 1892), and a Member of the Royal Sanitary Institute, (1894); and the Institute. of Municipal and County Engineers. Henry Gilbert Whyatt was a contributor to several of the professional and technical papers. Publications included The Present Position of the Sewage Purification Problem (1898); Sanitary Construction in Building; Sanitary Conveniences and Drainage; Sewers and Sewerage (1929); Street, Roads and Pavements (1934). He was also editor of The Highway Engineer's Year Book for 1925. As Borough Engineer, Henry Gilbert Whyatt designed Grant Thorold park in Grimsby. Opened in 1911, the park featuring tree lined paths, ornamental drinking fountain, bandstand and three shelters. The site was enclosed by railings, produced by M Marshall of Queen’s Street, with posts bearing the Borough and Grant Thorold coats of arms produced by W MacFarlane of Glasgow. The trees, mainly sycamore, elm and beech were supplied by Messrs Pennells of Lincoln.

Henry Gilbert Whyatt, married Mary Jane Allen, the widow of James Allen and the second daughter of Alderman E. Henderson, J.P., of Gateshead at Durham Road UMFC, Gateshead on 19 September 1888. They had one son and two daughters, in addition to two children from her previous marriage.

Henry Gilbert Whyatt died on 17 January 1941.
