 Henry Avery is listed in both the 1881 and 1891 census as an architect, although no details have been found in the RIBA Library. Born in Manchester in 1859, he was the son of Robert Avery, manufacturer and agent of umbrella materials, and his wife Ellen.  At the time of the 1881 census, the family were living in Great Cheetham Street East, Broughton in Salford. In the late 1890s Henry Avery gave up architecture and joined his father and brother in the family firm of Robert B Avery and Sons umbrella material and japanned cloth finishers with offices at 20 High Street and works in Levenshulme Road Gorton.

Henry Avery died on 23 May 1923 at 4 Gales Bow Flixton, survived by his widow Annie Beatrice Avery (nee Holt) whom he married in 1898.
