Gerald Gasgoine Lynde was born at Sale, Cheshire, on March 2nd, 1873, the son of James Henry Lynde, and grandson of James Gasgoine Lynde. He was educated at Giggleswick School.

In 1890 he joined Edmund Nuttall, Sons and Company Limited.Civil Engineering contractors of Trafford Park as an assistant engineer, and he was associated with that firm throughout his professional life, for many years as its managing director. On the firm’s merger to a London company, he became managing director of the joint companies and left for London. During Mr. Lynde's connection with the firm many large engineering projects were carried out, including extensive works on the Manchester and Huddersfield main drainage schemes, Newcastle and Reading tramways, a number of docks at Manchester, Newcastle, and Bristol, the Walker Naval Yard, the Royal Liver Building, Liverpool; The Thirlmere Reservoir and aquaduct together with other large waterworks contracts for Manchester and Birmingham,; the Mersey Tunnel; Southampton Graving Dock and scores of dry docks, railways and engineering works.

He was associated with the first Lord Cowdray in the formation of the Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors in 1919  and he succeeded Lord Cowdray as President in 1926, continuing in that office until 1933.

In 1924 he investigated new methods of house building for a Government Committee, was vice chairman of the International Congress of Building and Public Works (1930), President of the International Federation, and president of a section of the Societie de Ingesieurs Civil de France (1927)

Gerald Gasgoigne Lynde died on 1 August 1938 at his home, Tenchley's Park, Limpsfield Common, Surrey, following an operation.
