Born on 12 July 1875 at Pendleton, George Wilfred Lord was the eldest son of Henry Lord, architect of Manchester and nephew of Rhodes Calvert, architect of Bradford (d1926). He was articled to his father in 1892 and remained his assistant until 1906. He gained a BSc (third) in mathematics in 1895 at Victoria University, Manchester and an MSc in 1899. He was elected a Licentiate of the RIBA in 1910, proposed by (Abraham) Rhodes Calvert (uncle), I Taylor and P Ogden. In 1900, while assistant to his father, he seems to have had some involvement in the re-building of the Griffin Hotel Lower Broughton Road Salford (demolished) and Old Rock House Hotel Peel Green Road, Barton Eccles, appearing at the licensing sessions.

In 1906 he emigrated to Port Sudan at Port Sudan, probably through connections of his brother Percy Calvert Lord. Here he was architect to the Sudan Government and in1908 was Architect to the Agriculture and Lands Department In 1911 he exhibited a drawing of the Eastern Telegraph Company Headquarters Port Sudan at the Royal Academy. By 1913 he was working for the Sudan Government Railways at Atbara, Sudan

The RIBA Kalander of 1919-1920 still records his employment by the Sudan Government Railways, although in the aftermath of Word War I some Kalendar entries are out of date. It would appear that by 1920, when he was elected a Fellow of the RIBA, he had returned to Manchester and set up in partnership with (unknown) Hadfield in his father’s old office at 42 Deansgate. Directory entries indicate that this partnership continued until 1928 at which time G W Lord retired to the south of England.  As yet there are no recorded works for this period.

George Wilfred Lord died suddenly on 24 February 1947 at Bulwell Stubbings Maidenhead Berkshire.
