The son of W Telford Gunson Esq, architect of Manchester Ernest Gunson was born in Manchester on 16 April 1869. He was educated at the Manchester Grammar School; before serving articles with his father. He was admitted into to partnership in 1891, the firm being re-named W. Telford Gunson & Son. He was for many years rating valuer to the Manchester Corporation, the Barton Assessment Committee and the Warrington Assessment Committee. He was a past chairman of the Lancashire and Cheshire Branch of the Chartered Surveyors Institute and past president of the Manchester Society of Land Agents and Surveyors.

Ernest Gunson retired to Birkdale, Southport in 1939 where he died on 25 April 1940.
