Eric Shorland Ball was the third son of George Shorland Ball and Amy Boddington and nephew of the architect William Ball. He was born on 27 May 1884 at Monton, Eccles, and baptised at St Catherine's, Barton on Irwell. In 1909 he was briefly in partnership with George Westcott (qv), He enlisted in the Army Service Corps at the outbreak of the First World War and was promoted 2nd Lieutenant 24 January 1915, He served Egypt and Gallipoli. In 1910 he married Kathleen Nicholson.
