Edward Hartley Hacking was the only son of Nicholas Hartley Hacking, architect, and Mary Alice of Peel Green Road, Barton-on Irwell. By 1911 he was in partnership with his father under the style “N Hartley Hacking” and continued the practice under the same name after his father’s death.

Edward Hartley Hacking died on 28 November 1940, aged 57 years and was buried at the church of St Catherine.
