Arthur Bennett was Surveyor to the Duke of Bridgewater's Worsley estate, listed as a land surveyor in the 1901 census, and architect and surveyor in 1911. A staunch Methodist - the family were such stalwarts of the local Methodist church that it was nicknamed Bennett's chapel, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and served as Mayor of Swinton and Pendlebury (1934?)

He married Eleanor Peel (1873- 1945) of Pendlebury, and had four sons. His architectural practice was continued by his third son Norman, while his youngest son (Sir) Hubert became chief architect of London County Council 1956-1971. His grandson, Gordon Bennett (1947-2009), trained at Manchester School of Architecture, and later emigrated to California.
