Charles Herbert Heaton, the second son of George Heaton and his first wife, Jane, was born in 1875 at Wigan. He is assumed to have trained in his father’s office and passed the intermediate examination of the Royal Institute British Architects in 1911. The RIBA Kalendar of 1904 records that he became a Probationer of the RIBA in 1897 and a Student Member in 1901, but no further RIBA records have been found.  In the census of 1911, he described himself as an architect and surveyor living in Wigan.

In 1920 Charles H Heaton, is recorded as an engineer’s assistant and draftsman in the Lancashire County Offices, Preston and may well have continued to be employed there. Probate records indicate that he was living at Penwortham, a suburb of Preston, at the time of his death in 1929.
