Choir Stalls, Bury Parish Church
BURY (LANCS.) - New Choir Stalls have been placed in the Chancel of the Parish Church of Bury (one of the best-known works of the late J. S. Crowther, Architect) as a Memorial to the late Rev. Canon Hopwood. The Stalls are of oak, elaborately carved, and are in the Decorated style. They are placed upon a deep stone sill of red Mansfield stone, which has a sunk tracery band running along the front. The elbows are cut out of the solid oak, 3.5in. thick, and have tracery panels and carved finials. The fronts of the Choir Stalls next the Chancel are divided into panels which are richly traceried. The cornice below the book-board is composed of a series of sculptured angels with spread wings, extending the full length of seats. The work has been carried out by the following firms: stonework, Messrs. R. Rathbone and Son, Atherton woodwork and carving, Messrs. J. Hatch and Sons, of Lancaster; sculpture, Mr. R. Bridgeman, of Lichfield. The cost has been about £500, and the work has been designed by and carried out under the superintendence of Messrs. Austin and Paley, Architects, of Lancaster.
