Additions: Church of St Mark. Newtown near Wigan
EXTENSION OF ST. MARK'S CHURCH, PEMBERTON, LANCASHIRE - The foundation stone has just been laid of additions to St. Mark's, Newtown. The main fabric has been in existence for some years*, and the additions consist of a chancel, 33 feet long, with a width of 24 feet. On the north side will be provided two vestries, one each for clergy and choir. The organ chamber will be situated on the south of the chancel, with a circular staircase on the angle. The organ chamber will be carried to the height of the chancel eaves. In the chancel stalls will be provided for the choir, and two prayer-desks - one on the north and one on the south side will be introduced, the stalls and desks to be executed in Dantzic oak. The buildings of the additions will be similar in character to the present nave - parpoint walling, with Red Runcorn dressings. The work is to be carried out in accordance with designs prepared by Messrs. Heaton, Ralph, and Heaton, of Wigan, at an estimated cost of £2,600. Mr. Wm. France, of Pemberton, has undertaken the building, and the stonework has been let to Mr. W. Winnard. [Builder 5 May 1900 page 449]
