5-15 Swinley Road, Wigan
By 1876 the Wigan Land and Building Company had completed an impressive terrace of ten three-storey houses, to the designs of J Ford Mackenzie at 2-20 Swinley Road and there development ceased. One of the directors, Henry Woodcock, leased plots of land, directly opposite the terrace on his own account, subsequently engaging George Heaton, to draw up plans for the building of a terrace of six houses.
The terrace, numbered 5-15 Swinley Road, was completed in 1878 and is now listed Grade II. Of two and a half storeys raised above semi-basements with flights of steps leading up to the main entrances, they featured ground floor bay windows and paired first floor windows. Built of red brick with terra cotta dressings and some sandstone, the listing text described the style as eclectic, combining Gothic and ‘Arts and Crafts’ style features.
