William Kennedy trained in Liverpool, then moved to Manchester as assistant with Mills and Murgatroyd: he designed many of the branch offices of the Manchester and County Bank. He opened his own practice in Manchester in 1920, and his work included the Nurses Home and hospital extension for the Buckland Board of Guardians at Knutsford, extensions and renovations of Paton & Baldwins office and warehouse in Manchester, various industrial buildings for the cotton trade and domestic work in Cheshire and Derbyshire. Early in the Second World War he became Civilian Garrison Engineer and later was Assessor for the War Damage Commission until retirement in 1950.

Two of his sons, Professor Robert Terence Kennedy CBE, ARIBA, MTPI of New Zealand and T Brian Kennedy ARIBA MTPI, County Architect and Planning Officer for Rutland, were articled to him.Three of his grandchildren became architects, Philip and Nicholas Kennedy who practised in New Zealand, and Jane Kennedy OBE, now retired but former partner and chair of Purcell Architecture.
