MR. JAMES CHEETHAM, J.P. Mr. James J.P., steward of the Rochdale Estates for Mr. J. B.H. Entwistle, of Kilworth House Leicestershire, died on Tuesday night. For 25 years was a member the Rochdale Town Council, and in 1893 the Mayoralty of his native town was conferred upon him. Never before had a Conservative filled the civic chair in Rochdale. In 1889, was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Rochdale. Three years ago he resigned the office of Alderman in the Rochdale Town Council on account of his health. For many years he was chairman of the Conservative party, and occupied this office when Colonel Royds, MP. was first elected member for Rochdale. Last week he became seriously ill, when on a visit to Mr Entwistle at Kilworth House. He was in his 69th year. [Manchester Courier 10 July 1902 page 8]

MR JAMES CHEETHAM - The death is announced of Mr. James Cheetham, J.P. of Park Hill, Rochdale, at the age of 69. He was a native oi Rochdale and an architect by profession. For twenty-five years he was a member the Rochdale Town Council, serving for years as alderman. In 1893-1894 he was elected mayor. He was long the chairman oi the Conservative party in the borough, and held that office when Colonel C. M Royd was first elected member for Rochdale. In February, 1889, he was appointed a borough magistrate. Three years ago, he retired from Rochdale Town Council and from chairmanship of Ibo Conservative party, owing to declining health. Yesterday at the Rochdale Police Court, the Mayor Samuel Turner referred to the loss that the magistrates had sustained by the loss of their respected colleague.
