Born at Bolton in 1880, Henry Unwin was the son of James Unwin, ironmonger and Jane, his wife. Details of his early education are unknown but in the 1901 census, he is described as an Architectural Draughtsman. In 1904 he became a student member of the RIBA suggesting that he was articled to an (unknown Bolton) architect by this date. Having passed the RIBA examination, he was elected an Associate of the RIBA in 1909 and in 1911 was practising as an Architect and Surveyor in Wigan. By 1913 he was in partnership with Harry Dawber Holland as Unwin and Holland at 11 Library Street, Wigan. H. D. Holland died in January 1916 aged 32 while Henry Unwin entered Military service serving in the Royal Engineers 1915-1919. Returning to Wigan after the end of the First World War, he entered into partnership with Richard Pennington under the style Pennington and Unwin.

On 27 March 1907 Henry Unwin married Alison Blyth Cordingley (1881-1923) at Mawdsley Street Chapel, Bolton. There were three children of this marriage, Harold, Mary, and George Raymond Unwin. Mary died within weeks of her mother in the summer of 1923 while Harold joined the Royal Navy. Sometime president of the Manchester Society of Architects, George Raymond Unwin FRIBA trained as an architect and practised in Manchester.

In 1926 Henry Unwin married Kate Halton at Wigan. He died on 10 December 1946 leaving a widow and two sons from his first marriage.
