Arthur Henry Dunkin was born the son of Edwin and Mary Willey Dunkin at Appletreewick near Skipton in July 1879, his birth being registered at Skipton July – September 1879. His parents and older siblings were all born in Cornwall and the family seem to have moved to Yorkshire only shortly before Alfred’s birth. The Census returns contain several discrepancies, not least his place of birth. Census returns for 1881 and 1891 confirm the birth registration at Skipton. However, those if 1901 and 1911 state that he was born at Truro, Cornwall, although no supporting evidence has been found.
Details of his training and education are unknown. In March 1901 he was employed as deputy surveyor to Bacup Corporation. By March 1902 he had been appointed borough surveyor to Great Harwood Urban District Council, a role he continued until his death in 1940.
On 11 August 1903 he married Lily Sutcliffe, the eldest daughter of Jonathan Sutcliffe of Market Street, Bacup, at Mount Pleasant Wesleyan Chapel Haslingden. They had one known child, a son Donald, born about 1908.
Alfred Henry Dunkin died on 8 November 1940 and was buried in Great Harwood Cemetery.
